Super-quick storytime: 

Last August, I joined a social media accountability sprint. 90 days and 1,000 subscribers later, I jumped ship. 

So why did I decide it wasn’t the place for me?

It all came down to the numbers, three numbers to be exact: 

  1. Analytics: my open rates took a nosedive from an average of 60%+ to as low as 29%. I was in the dark without in-platform automations or granularity. Still, I knew I couldn’t leave things to chance without harming my business.

  2. Algorithm: Notes became another form of praying to the algorithm. They rewarded volume over virtue (and I didn’t even stay long enough to get sucked into chats, lives, or short-form video). I saw the best results when I published at least 3 notes a day, but that’s not a number I can commit to.

  3. Audience: paid subscribers are the holy grail of the platform. But I didn’t like the numbers when I did the math for low prices and lower subscription rates. I’d need better analytics and a bigger in-platform audience to make going paid worthwhile.

Those were 3 things Substack influencers (conveniently) left out.
